Caring Golden Retriever surprises owner with baby koala whose life she just saved

There are countless stories that prove how incredible creatures dogs are. They’re known as the man’s best friend and their loyalty is above any other’s creature on Earth. Yet, this story proves that dogs not only care about humans, but other beings too.

It happened in Strathdownie, Western Virginia, Australia where Kerry McKinnon and her husband got a very touching surprise from their beloved dog, Asha. During winter, the temperatures in the morning could reach around 41F degrees. And while a Golden Retriever’s coat is warm enough, you can’t say the same about a baby koala. So when the McKinnons woke up early in the morning, they’ve spotted something really unusual on their porch.

“It was quite early in the morning, and my husband yelled out to me to come have a look at something,” Kerry told News.com.au. “I didn’t know what he was talking about at first, but then I saw this tiny baby koala snuggled on top of Asha.”

While it is uncertain how the baby koala ended up under Asha’s coat, the dog’s caring spirit definitely saved the little’s creatures life as it could not resist at those so low temperatures.

Asha’s fur mom admitted she was’t expected to such a surprise for her doggy. “I just burst out laughing. Poor Asha didn’t know what to think; she just kept looking at me with such a confused look. She looked a bit guilty when I came out to see what was going on. Her expression was hilarious,” Kerry said.

“She kept looking back at the koala bear, but she wasn’t trying to get him off her or anything. She was happy to let him snuggle into her.”

I think we never know how the little koala ‘got adopted’ by this so caring Golden Retriever, but we definitely know that Asha is an incredible dog. According to Kerry, the most plausible scenario is the koala got separated by its mom. “I think the koala bear baby fell out of his mum’s pouch and didn’t know what to do. He would have just wandered over to our back porch and seen the dogs in their beds, then decided to snuggle in Asha’s fur because it’s nice and warm.”

Asha’s mom declared herself so proud of her dog. “Asha definitely saved the koala’s life by keeping him warm. He would have died out there if left alone all night. The poor thing could have been taken by a fox or something too.”

Despite it was almost impossible for the McKinnons to separate the little creature from Asha, it was necessary to take it to a vet. After that, they took it to a local shelter where the adorable creature needs to stay until it will be safe for it to be released into the wild.

“I think dogs have that protective instinct. The koala didn’t want to leave Asha’s back. When we took the koala off to wrap it in a blanket, it hissed at me and carried on,” Kerry said.

“I think it would have been happy to have just slept there all day. It was really an amazing animal friendship to see and so uniquely Australian.”
