German Shepherd treads water for eleven hours to rescue his owner

A German Shepherd in Brisbane, Australia has left everyone baffled after she surprisingly managed to tread water for at least 11 hours, after his owner’s boat sank off the coast. But that’s not all as thanks to her stoicism, her human had been rescued, too.

The pup was spotted by a group of fishermen who found it very strange when seeing a dog desperately swimming surrounded by some floating items, including a fuel tank, a tackle box as many others. One of the fishermen has reached the Moreton Bay police department which soon initiated a rescue.

They initially pulled the exhausted dog out of water. The heroic dog, later identified as Heidi was taken to a vet clinic, to receive medical care. The dramatic rescue went on as a helicopter, four police vessels and Coast Guards have arrived at the scenes as ABC News reported.

A few moments later, the rescue team managed to find Heidi’s owner, too. The 63-year-old man was climbing onto a sunken vessel 13.5-foot vessel off the coast. He later told the authorities “that the boat lost power the evening before and began to take on water.” He also said the moment when the boat begun to sank, he and Heidi were separated. Since than moment, the brave doggie managed to swim 11-hours until she was spotted by the fishermen. Thanks to her incredible efforts, her owner is now alive.

Both the owner and his beloved dog have made it through without no injuries. Shortly after the incident, the police released a safety reminder for all those who’re venturing offshore.

“We would take this opportunity to remind boaties to plan for the worst when they’re out on the water,” Senior Sergeant Bairstow said. “Always wear personal flotation device and ensure that your safety equipment, including EPIRBs, are tested and in good order. Thankfully there was a happy ending to this search and Heidi was able to be our honorary PD for the day.”
