Loyal dog guards trapped friend for a week until help arrives

If anyone still had any doubts regarding how loyal dogs are, this remarkable story is proving, once again what they are capable of. While her friend got trapped into cistern deep in a remote ravine, for a week, this dog refused to leave her side, until humans came to rescue her!

According to the Dodo, Tillie, an Irish setter-spaniel mix and Phoebe, a basset hound had been out for a walk together where they live on the island of Vashon, Washington. However, their owner started to worry about them since they failed to return home by night fall. Therefore, the man asked Vashon Island Pet Protectors for help.

Every day, for almost a week volunteer at the Vashon Island have been searching for the two dogs, but unsuccessfully. Then, one person had called to tell them that “for the past few days a ‘reddish’ dog had been coming up to them when they were out on their property and then promptly heading back into a ravine.”

It’s when they discovered that Tillie was trying to find some helps during all that time, while her companion, Phoebe got stuck into the cistern, unable to get out.

“We had been out looking for about a week when we heard from a farmer here who noticed a reddish dog on his property,” Carey, a volunteer at the Vanish Island told The Dodo. “She had quietly approached him, and when she got his attention, turned around and headed back toward this ravine nearby. I decided to go check it out.”

“When I got there and looked down, Tillie saw me but didn’t come running up. She just stayed near the edge of this cistern, pressed with her head as close as she could get. Had she run up, we might have never realized that Phoebe was down there. She just stayed put, making it so clear that I had to come to her so I would see her friend,” Carey said.

Tillie’s incredible loyalty and compassion for her friend, brought everyone in tears. “When I saw what was happening, tears were immediate. It was just so touching,” Carey recalls.

“For nearly a week Tillie stayed by her side with the exception of the few minutes of each day when she went for help. A huge thanks to Joe Curiel for realizing something was up and a round of applause to the awesome and amazing Miss Tillie. A true friend and a humbling example of the power of love,” Vashon Island Pet Protectors wrote in a Facebook post.

Fortunately, the dogs were both well and unharmed and they got back to their owner who couldn’t stop her tears of joy when saw them!
