Some terrifying images of a senior elephant who looks nothing but a bag of bones, recently surfaced, creating a heavy backlash on social media. The 70 years old elephant is forced to walk miles, every single night to entertain people at a religious festival, the Metro reports.
But, what’s more heartbreaking is that the poor creature’s skeleton body is covered in a costume, so her emaciated body to pass unnoticed by the viewers, during the religious parade.
According to Lek Chailert, the founder of Save Elephant Foundation, the creature named Tikiri is just one of the dozens of elephants forced to take part at the Esala Perahera Festival in Sri Lanka.
“Tikiri joins in the parade early every evening until late at night every night for ten consecutive nights, amidst the noise, the fireworks, and smoke. She walks many kilometers every night so that people will feel blessed during the ceremony. No one sees her bony body or her weakened condition, because of her costume.” Lek wrote in a Facebook post.
While the organizers declared the animals’ safety is their first priority, Lek said the elephants are lacked of proper care and any concerns.
“No one sees the tears in her eyes, injured by the bright lights that decorate her mask, no one sees her difficulty to step as her legs are short shackled while she walks. How can we call this a blessing, or something holy, if we make other lives to suffer?” she wrote.
Unfortunately, lately there are more and more situations of elephants forced to perform in shows meant to entertain human beings, are surfacing. Earlier this year, a baby elephant died after being forced to dance for tourists!
